Nigeria Confirms Abuja Ebola Case Linked To Fast-Spreading Regional Outbreak

Nigeria's Health Ministry confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in a woman who had been in eastern Congo and transited through Uganda, raising alarm amid a fast-spreading regional outbreak.[1]

The woman developed symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a private Abuja hospital on October 11 before testing positive for Ebola.[1] Health Minister Muhammad Pate said authorities have identified and begun tracing 44 contacts of the patient.[1]

Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC, said the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has infected more than 9,500 people and killed more than 4,600.[1] WHO calls this the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record and says it is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic in deaths.[1] Kenya has confirmed nine infections in the current outbreak.[1]

Nigeria's Centre for Disease Control said it intensified surveillance and preparedness two weeks earlier, and the government established an Ebola task force in June 2026 after the Congo outbreak.[1] Uganda's Ministry of Health said the woman only transited through Uganda, that the location of exposure remains under investigation, and that Uganda has no confirmed active Ebola cases.[1]
